Johanna Bialkin has been doing a lot of digital storytelling. Over the last 15 years, she has built Aldea Home & Baby, and Covid-19 hit her brick and mortar stores hard. But she swiftly (in under 2 weeks, WOW!) moved her business online and now makes over 80% of sales online.
Aldea Home & Baby began as a concept where you walk into a store and say "I love this room, I want to purchase everything in it." It began as 5 different rooms crammed into a 1200 sqft area! When people started walking into the store, they really loved the baby/kids stuff (which Johanna found weird because she did not have kids!), but the products really resonated with them.
The baby world has evolved so much over the last 10 years, from just having boring products to something that's exciting and innovative — products that not only make your house feel baby-ready but ones that parents are comfortable with having in their home.
Johanna has merged her love for design with what people need to create some beautiful products. With over 15 years experience, she has learned how to read what the customer needs. And now, during Covid-19 times, her company has also started creating masks, hand sanitizers, wipes, diapers, thermometers, etc. With curbside delivery and Zoom design consultation, she takes pride in being able to serve the community during this time.
Aldea, meaning “small village,” is a local home and baby shop that Johanna Bialkin began in 2005 in the heart of the Mission District, San Francisco. Johanna's background in the non-profit sector paired with strong personal values gave her the desire to create a space that not only offers sustainable goods but also encourages community engagement.
